But here’s the thing: Texas alcohol laws (run by the TABC) can be trickier than a dusty dirt road after a rainstorm. Most folks think that if they aren’t "selling" drinks, the rules don't apply. Well, hold your horses! You might be making a few common mistakes that could land you in hot water.

Mistake #1: Thinking "Free" Always Means "No Permit Needed"
Most people believe that if they buy the booze and give it away for free at a private party, they are 100% in the clear. While that is mostly true, there is a big catch.
If you are charging your guests anything to get into the event: like a ticket price, a cover charge, or even a "mandatory donation": the TABC considers that an alcohol sale. Even if you say the drinks are free once they’re inside, that entry fee technically covers the cost of the booze.
The Rule: If money changes hands in exchange for access to alcohol, you are "selling," and you likely need a temporary permit or a licensed caterer with a TABC permit. If it’s a true private party at your home where guests pay absolutely nothing, you're usually fine without a permit!
Mistake #2: The "Service Fee" or "Donation" Loophole
We hear this one a lot: "I’m not charging for the beer; I’m just asking for a $20 donation to help cover the bartender!"
Nice try, but the TABC wasn't born yesterday. If a guest has to give a "donation" to get a drink, it’s a sale. If you charge a "service fee" that magically includes "free" cocktails, it’s a sale. These "thinly-veiled" workarounds are some of the easiest ways to get a fine.
Keep it simple: If you want a free bar, make it 100% free. If you want to recoup costs, you’ll need to work with a professional staffing company like us to ensure you’re following the law.
Mistake #3: Bringing Your Own Bottle to a Licensed Venue
Lubbock has some incredible venues, but not all of them allow "BYOB." If a venue already has a Mixed Beverage Permit or a Private Club Permit, it is actually illegal for you to bring your own alcohol onto the premises.
You can’t just roll in with a cooler of Lone Star if the venue is already licensed to sell liquor. Always check with your venue first. If they have a license, they usually have to be the ones to provide or serve the alcohol through their own staff or an approved partner.
Mistake #4: Letting the "Cousin Pour" Increase Your Liability
We get it: your cousin Dave is a hoot and says he’ll work the bar for a plate of brisket. But did you know that as the host, you are liable if someone gets overserved or if a minor gets a drink?

Our Rates (No Hidden Secrets!)
We believe in being transparent. Here is what you can expect when you hire the pros:
- Food & Banquet Servers: $30/hour
- TABC Bartenders: Starting at $40/hour
- Security (Off-duty Officers): $60/hour (Perfect for when venues require professional security)
- Event Cleanup: Starting at $250+ (Because nobody wants to clean up at 1 AM!)
Note: We have a 4-hour minimum for all shifts. Prices may vary for holidays, peak seasons, or short-notice bookings. We primarily serve Lubbock, but we frequently head out to Midland, Amarillo, Big Spring, and all across Texas for special events!
